Loaders are made up of systems, devised of complex sets of moving parts, each with an important role. These systems are responsible for making the loader function and work properly. A critical and sometimes misunderstood part is a hydraulic pump. At the center of hydraulic systems, hydraulic pumps provide the power needed for the loader’s hydraulic system to run. Most loader owners and operators are familiar with hydraulic pumps since they power the lifting and tilting components of the loader, but how do hydraulic pumps work?

Hydraulic Pumps – An Overview

Hydraulic pumps work by converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. This process starts when the pump creates a partial vacuum at the opening. The atmospheric pressure then forces the fluid into the inlet of the pump and the pump pushes the fluid into the hydraulic system. The pump typically has two different check valves. The 1st check valve is connected to the pump opening and only allows fluid to enter the pump through it. The 2nd check valve is connected to the pump discharge and only allows fluid to exit through it. The vacuum pressure in the pump cavity is determined by the position of the piston. The differences in pressure cause the check valves to open and close opposite each other. This allows fluid to come in and out at high pressure.

Maintaining Your Hydraulic Pump

To keep your loader running smoothly it is important to maintain your hydraulic pump and perform routine maintenance checks. We recommend checking for the following things on a regular basis:

  • Oil levels
  • Leaks
  • Dirt or water in the oil
  • Pressure valve readings
  • Running noise of the pump
  • Any dirt or build up around the pump and engine

Along with checking the list above it is also important to tighten any loose screws and pipe clamps. If you are not the one operating the loader, check with the operator for any maintenance or servicing that they have noticed that the loader needs.

Hydraulic pumps are essential for keeping your loader running at peak performance levels. The more you understand about how your hydraulic pump works and how to maintain it, the longer it will last. Sometimes though things break unexpectedly even when you follow all the steps correctly.
