What is a Gear Pump?

Gear pumps are a type of positive displacement pump. Fluid is moved through the pump by a series of gears. There are two types of gears in a gear pump, the driver and the driven. The driver gear is connected to the main shaft that is then connected to the engine. There are also two types of gear pumps: internal and external.

Advantages

  • Easy to maintain
    • Since gear pumps are relatively simple compared to other types of pumps. This makes maintenance easier if done regularly.
  • Low costs
    • If the gear pump is maintained properly, the overall costs of the pump are lower than other pumps on the market.
  • High work efficiency
    • The average gear pump has an efficiency of 93-98%, sometimes even reaching 100%.
  • Ability to work through different fluid densities
    • Most gear pumps run with water but can use many different fluids with varying densities. Some fluids that can be used include crude oil, acids, plastics, and diesel oils.

Disadvantages

  • Difficult to replace parts
    • Since gear pumps are a closed system, it can be difficult to replace just one part. Uneven wear on the gears can lead to loss of efficiency and the breakdown of the pump. Because of this, replacing a single part can be difficult, and often the whole pump needs to be replaced.
  • Loud
    • Gear pumps can be very loud, which can cause issues if trying to work in an area where loud noises are prohibited or if construction/equipment noise needs to be kept to a minimum.
  • Won’t work with abrasive fluids
    • Fluids with abrasive properties should be avoided when using gear pumps since they can wear down the gears and cause the pump to malfunction.

Gear pumps are just one of the many components that your loader engine may utilize to function properly.
