Founded in 1895 in New Holland, Pennsylvania, the New Holland Machine Company has long manufactured engine parts and machinery from agriculture to construction. Raised from humble beginnings in a Mennonite family, handyman Abram Zimmerman initially used his talents to repair and craft farming parts out of his father’s blacksmith shop. From there, he used his intellect and creativity to sell more advanced equipment to farmers, such as the German Otto 4-cycle and Columbus engines. While this brought in significant profits to the shop, Abram wasn’t satisfied with just selling engines; rather, by honing his skills, Zimmerman looked to manufacture his own engine.

By 1900, Zimmerman had not only designed a stationary engine that was lighter in weight but was also more efficient in water usage without the risk of cracking during winter. Once his prototype was finished, Zimmerman set plans to manufacture and sell his engines on the market. Through this process, he drew in investors and sold shares of his company to neighbors, raising around $50,000 to officially open the New Holland Machine Company in 1903.
Now the CEO of his own engine manufacturing company, Zimmerman began selling New Holland engines at rapid speed, growing enough capital to acquire a production building and hire 40 employees. With this sudden growth, New Holland engines went into full mass-production, succeeding in earning enough profits to expand their manufacturing processes beyond agricultural equipment.
Though 10 years later, investors took over the company and would sell it to Sperry Corporation in 1947, New Holland engines continued to thrive within the manufacturing industry regardless of ownership. From Sperry to Ford, New Holland manufacturing has grown to produce agricultural and construction equipment, which even today are renowned for their lines of tractors, backhoes, excavators, and various types of loaders.
From 2007 to today, New Holland continues to manufacture heavy machinery, maintaining their innovative stride as founded by Abram Zimmerman. Currently, their production processes have moved to developing eco-friendly engines to meet the same quality and efficiency of their traditional equipment while creating fewer emissions.
